Crowns and bridges

A crown is a cap made of a hard material, such as zirconium and/or porcelain, that is placed over your own tooth for reinforcement. The dentist can advise a crown when a tooth or molar has already been filled to a large extent, there is insufficient support for a filling, a root canal treatment has been performed that has weakened the tooth or molar, or for aesthetic reasons.

A bridge is made when one or more teeth are missing. The most common bridge consists of two crowns that are placed on the adjacent teeth and an intermediate piece that consists of one or more artificial teeth and/or molars.

The fabrication of a crown or bridge is done in two appointments. At the first appointment, the dentist grinds the tooth or molar under anesthesia to create space for the crown or bridge. Then the dentist takes an impression or makes a 3D scan of the ground tooth and the opposite jaw. After the color determination for the definitive crown or bridge, the dentist will place a temporary provision on your tooth. During the second appointment, two weeks later, the emergency provision is removed and the permanent crown or bridge is placed after it has been properly fitted and approved.
