Caries

Cavities (caries) are caused by plaque on the teeth. This sticky layer contains bacteria that convert sugars and carbohydrates into acids that slowly attack the tooth enamel. The first stage of caries is generally painless. If the caries process continues, the deeper dentine (dentin) is affected. Dentin is much softer than enamel and therefore caries can spread there much more quickly. If left untreated, it will eventually lead to pain. During the appointment for the treatment of caries, the affected tooth tissue is removed, after which it is filled again with a white filling. This is usually a composite filling. The treatment can, if desired, be performed with an anaesthetic
